When a dystopian world cheerily televises the slaughter of youths for sport, you can expect a whole lot of death. Now that the Hunger Games series is reaching its conclusion with Mockingjay — Part 2, Yahoo Movies has compiled a list of the most momentous casualties across all four movies. Spoilers follow!
Rue’s death is arguably one of the saddest and most pivotal in the series, fanning the flames of a budding uprising. The young contestant is struck by Marvel’s spear just before he dies from Katniss’s arrow. Katniss covers Rue’s body with bright flowers, sings her a lullaby, and gives her the famous three-finger salute.
Falsely assuming Clove is the one who killed Rue, Thresh slams her against a wall and cracks her skull.
In the book, the details of Thresh’s death remain mysterious. But in the movie he is presumed dead by way of wolf mutts (short for “muttations” — mutated animals) as Katniss and Peeta overhear him being mauled.
The final tribute to die in the 74th Hunger Games, Cato is struck by Katniss’s arrow as he threatens to kill Peeta, catapulting the ill-fated tribute backward into a pack of wolf mutts.
“She sacrificed herself for me, and I didn’t even know her name,” observed Peeta, after a mutant orange monkey fatally bit the nameless contestant on the neck.
Beetee’s shy and eccentric companion gets offed as she unspools wiring key to destroying the arena force field. After Wiress’s throat is slit by Gloss, Katniss avenges the death, immediately killing Gloss, retrieving the wire, and continuing with the plan.
The first major death in Mockingjay – Part 2, Boggs (foreground) is blown up by a hidden pod in the Capitol. He transfers security clearances to Katniss before he slips away, warning her not to trust President Coin and her followers.
