Quantico finally makes its way over to UK screens and it’s a show that’s currently getting critical acclaim stateside. The First Lady of Bollywood Priyanka Chopra fronts the cast as Alex Parrish, one of the new recruits at the FBI’s training academy in Quantico, Virginia. The story is split into two timelines with flashbacks following Alex and her fellow recruits during their training at Quantico. But it’s mainly set in the present where Alex is being framed by a former classmate for masterminding a terror attack on Grand Central Station in New York, which is said to be the biggest since 9/11. She is forced to go on the run from the FBI when they don’t believe that it wasn’t her. It’s a show that’s packed with thrilling mysteries and a whodunnit that you (and Alex) have to solve through the clues that each episode leaves. Here’s five reasons why you should tune in.

Priyanka Chopra - To say Priyanka Chopra is this year’s breakout star is an understatement - she already IS a star. Chopra has acted in over 50 Bollywood films, sung with Pitbull and Will.I.Am and won the Miss World pageant in 2000 at the tender age of 17. Quantico marks her Hollywood debut and she’s the first Indian actress to front an American television show. She even won a People’s Choice Award for playing Agent Alex Parrish, the first South Asian person to do so. Now how’s that for diversity?

It has a diverse cast - Speaking of, Quantico’s cast is incredibly diverse. Aside from Chopra being an Indian, the principal characters are Hispanic, Arab, African-American and Caucasian. The chemistry between them forms like organic family bond. Nothing feels forced; the show satisfies your appetite for the need of diversity in a mainstream drama because the characters live in a world that brings together people of all background

Badass women - The show doesn’t lack in strong female leads. Aside from Chopra, other female cast members include Anujanue Ellis who plays Miranda Shaw, the director of Quantico’s training program and Alex’s mentor; Yasmine Al Massri who plays Nimah Amin, a bubbly, had-working Muslim recruit and Johanna Braddy who plays Shelby Wyatt, Alex’s intelligent best friend. What’s more is that everyone is (mostly) best friends, aside from Anabelle Acosta who plays Natalie Vasquez, Alex’s professional and personal rival who has a vengeance against her, which plays into both stories.

There’s loads of secrets and betrayal - Everyone comes into the show with their own secrets and these are eventually fleshed out through both timelines. The character with the most to hide is Liam O’Conner (Josh Hopkins) a seasoned FBI agent who’s been demoted to teaching at Quantico, but is the lead agent in hunting down Alex in the present storyline. There’s also Ryan Booth (Jake McLaughlin), a handsome stranger who has a fling with Alex at the beginning of the show but there’s something more to him. Even Alex has her fair share of secrets that she’s hiding.

And everyone is a suspect - We quickly find out that the mastermind behind the Grand Central Station bombing is one of Alex’s former classmates. Everyone is a suspect on this show. Everyone is shady and everyone acts shady. It’s up to Alex to figure out who’s setting her up, but this is proved to be difficult when she has to do things in secret on the run with the help of trusted friends.

Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra has revealed her “wild child” tendencies that attracted her to her new TV show.

The actress and former Miss World takes on the role of FBI recruit Alex Parrish in drama Quantico, her first big role outside of her native India, where she is a household name for her starring turns on the big screen.

Speaking on the set of the show in Montreal, Canada, she said: “The best roles for women are on TV. Coming from a feature background in India, I think this is the best time to be an actress right now, in Indian films at least. I’ve been very sure about the fact I like picking empowered roles that are not replaceable, even if they are small.”

Priyanka has become the first south Asian actress to win a People’s Choice Award in America for her role on the show but she said she didn’t want her ethnicity to be a factor in her casting.

In an underdog win for a movie about an underdog profession, the newspaper drama Spotlight took best picture at a 88th Academy Awards.

Tom McCarthy’s film about the Boston Globe’s investigative reporting on sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests won over the favored frontier epic The Revenant. McCarthy’s well-crafted procedural, led by a strong ensemble cast, had lagged in the lead-up to the Oscars, losing ground to the flashier filmmaking of Alejandro Inarritu’s film.

But Spotlight — an ode to the hard-nose, methodical work of a journalism increasingly seldom practiced — took the night’s top honor despite winning only one other Oscar for McCarthy and Josh Singer’s screenplay. Such a sparsely-awarded best picture winner hasn’t happened since 1952’s The Greatest Show On Earth.

The night, however, belong to host Chris Rock, who launched immediately into the uproar over the lack of diversity in this year’s nominees, and didn’t let up. “The White People’s Choice Awards,” he called the Oscars, which were surrounded by protests (including one outside the Dolby Theatre by the Rev. Al Sharpton) and boycotts.

Sandra Bullock is one classy lady. Despite being a ridiculously talented actress with a whole wealth of awards filling up her cabinets at home, she steers clear of the limelight and prefers to keep her private life, well, private.

But that isn’t to say she keeps her thoughts to herself – especially when it comes to topics that really matter to her.

The 51-year-old actress hasn’t tiptoed around the issues of sexism in the film industry that have hit headlines so many times in the last year, so it wasn’t all that surprising when Bullock took to the People’s Choice Awards stage last night to give a shout out to one group of women who don’t get enough support – working mums.

In particular, the four “working mamas” she beat to scoop the Favourite Movie Actress award: Anne Hathaway, Melissa McCarthy, Meryl Streep and Scarlett Johansson.

On Wednesday night, Pretty Little Liars scored the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Cable TV Drama, a win that should be unsurprising considering the show’s rabid online fan base. The series will be back on January 12 and the upcoming episode marks a big change in its plot line. As the second half of season six opens, the show will jump five years ahead, taking its four main characters out of high school and into the real world. There’s also now a new villain to contend with. We caught up with Troian Bellisario, who plays Spencer, to discuss where that time jump brings the characters both personally and style-wise. Plus, the actress had some thoughts on how Hollywood could put social media to better use this year.

Friendly Exes (or More?)
Relations between Madonna and ex-husband No. 2, Guy Ritchie, aren’t going so well, but things with ex-husband No. 1, Sean Penn, are a different story. The songstress brought her youngest children, David and Mercy, along to Penn’s annual Golden Globes eve Help Haiti Home gala on Saturday in L.A. Their cozy appearance reignites rumors that they have rekindled their romance, something neither of them has commented on. (Photo: Getty Images)

Somewhere, Jordin Sparks is doing a major eye roll. Jason Derulo and his new girlfriend, model Daphne Joy, made their red carpet debut at the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday night.

They were ready for their close-up, wearing coordinating black and white outfits. Her white dress had a sexy leg slit and cut-outs to show off her curves; he rocked one of the more formal looks with a scarf draped over his suit and also had on a slew of diamonds.

The “Talk Dirty” singer, 26, has been dating Joy — whose major claim to fame prior to this is that she has a 3-year-old son, Sire, with 50 Cent — since November. The duo rang in the New Year together near Miami. He posted an Instagram photo of them in their swimsuits, using the hashtag “baewatch.”

Asked about his relationship on the red carpet last night, Derulo told E! News, “I don’t want to talk too much about it, but I’m definitely enjoying life right now.”

Vin Diesel struggled to get through his emotional speech as he paid tribute to late co-star Paul Walker while accepting an award for Furious 7 at the People’s Choice Awards.

The actor looked like he was choking back tears as he accepted the award for favourite movie and favourite action movie, before launching into the opening lines of Wiz Khalifa’s See You Again until he was cut off.

He dedicated the two awards in his hand to his character Dom and Paul’s character Brian in the franchise.

“They said to make this short and sweet, so I’ll keep it short and sweet, it was a labour of love and my only message to you is you’d be amazed what you can do with love.”

“When the tragedy was too heavy it was the love of everyone that got me through and now I’m standing here with you telling me this is your favourite film of the year.”
