Victoria’s Secret is basically charging a big boob tax. Just a quick dive into the site revealed that larger sizes cost about $3 more than the A,B,Cs. As Styleite points out, larger sizes obviously require more fabric, but when you’re making VS-style profits ($6.12 billion in sales in 2012), is hiking up prices really necessary? Or does it just serve to repel the customers you’re sort of faux-including?
Last year, Old Navy came under fire for charging $12 to $15 dollars more for their plus size clothing. The brand released an official statement blaming both fabric and fit for the added costs: “Styles are not just larger sizes of other women’s items, they are created by a team of designers who are experts in creating the most flattering and on-trend plus styles, which includes curve-enhancing and curve-flattering elements such as four-way stretch materials and contoured waistbands, which most men’s garments do not include. This higher price point reflects the selection of unique fabrics and design elements.”
