Model and actress Lily Cole is fronting a new project aimed at tackling illiteracy around the world and in the UK.
The 28-year-old is calling on MPs to help confront the problem – with Project Literacy, a coalition of groups, behind her. Lily said she was shocked by some of the statistics she discovered ahead of the launch of the Alphabet Of Illiteracy campaign – an alphabet that uses each letter to highlight an issue that could be improved with better literacy.
The campaigners say tackling illiteracy is a gateway to tackling many of the world’s problems – from child marriage, gender inequality and malnutrition to female genital mutilation and drug abuse.
“I’m not pretending I have the solution to the problems. I’m trying to raise awareness and make people think about illiteracy in a more comprehensive way,” said Lily ahead of the event.
Project Literacy have launched a petition that will be presented to the UN on International Literacy Day later this year, as part of their target that by 2030 no newborn child will face a life of poor literacy.
