Bollywood’s off-beat and totally cool actors

They’ve set the screen on fire with their curiously good looks, effervescent personalities and exceptional performances; they’ve managed to garner appreciation and awards for their off-beat films and they don’t seem to crave the limelight. Meet Bollywood’s fiery brigade who are happy doing just the kind of films they love doing.

Nandita Das

What can we say about this dusky beauty except, WOW! A brilliant performer, and an extremely passionate social activist, Nandita Das has won accolades in areas apart from films. She was the first Indian to be inducted into the International Women’s Forum’s hall of fame for her contributions to the arts! Impressive!  Having said that, she’s well known for her roles in Deepa Mehta’s Earth, and Water and the Tamil film Kannatthil Mutthamittal with R Madahavan

Vinay Pathak

Bheja Fry is what comes to mind when you talk about Vinay Pathak, the actor who is known for his quirky roles in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Khosla Ka Ghosla to name a few. His superb timing and witty one-liners make him a standout and a true pleasure to watch. Known for his numerous television shows (OYE, Ranvir, Vinay aur Kaun!) Vinay Pathak redefines the word entertainment.

Sanjay Mishra

There’s so much more to this character actor than what is portrayed on screen. Like, you might remember him as Apple Singh - the icon used by ESPN Star Sports to promote the 1999 Cricket World Cup! Or, you might recall his gripping role in Ankhon Dekhi which won him several awards. Yes, Sanjay Mishra is quite an actor and these films wouldn’t just be the same without him.

Ranvir Shorey

First famous as a VJ on television, Ranvir didn’t really make an impact with his debut in Ek Chotisi Love Story where he played Manisha Koirala’s boyfriend. But he subsequently got the attention he deserved in Khosla Ka Ghosla. He is also known for hosting the Great Indian Comedy Show on Star One along with co-star Vinay Pathak.

Rajpal Yadav

He is certainly the  lifeline of a film when it boils down to the comic effect. Although Rajpal Yadav found success in negative roles, he found greater fame in portraying comic characters, a few memorable ones being Bhaagam Bhaag with Akshay Kumar and Govinda and Chup Chup Ke with Shahid Kapoor. A  laugh riot all the way, Rajpal Yadav’s quite a treat to watch!

Rahul Bose

Here’s another actor who is known for his social activisim as much as he’s known for the choice of films. From Jhankaar Beats to Mr. and Mrs. Iyer he sure has made a place for himself in the industry with Time Magazine calling him “The superstar of Indian arthouse cinema”. Rahul Bose floors you every time with his in-your-face acting and an absolutely fantastic sense of comic timing

Raghubir Yadav

If you’ll remember DoorDarshan and it’s all time favorite primetime shows, you’ll remember Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne (1990) and Raghubir Yadav for his superb character portrayal of the protagonist. From then on, he has essayed critical roles in films like Salaam Bombay! in which he plays the drug addict.  Raghubir Yadav is the only Indian actor to have received the Silver Peacock Best Actor Award, at the International Film Festival of India!

Konkona Sen Sharma

She rose to fame with her daunting portrayal of a journalist fighting the dirty newspaper politics in Page 3, and ever since Konkona has been riding the tide. A few selective but intelligent choice of movies has kept this pretty lass in the limelight. Although not the kind to romance and dance around the hills in chiffon sarees, Konkona has emerged a character actor given her roles in Wake Up Sid! and Mr. and Mrs. Iyer.
