Keeping up reappearances - Hyacinth Bucket is back

The desperate attempts to climb the slippery social pole of Hyacinth Bucket will return to the small screen in a one-off prequel to the much-loved sitcom Keeping Up Appearances.

Kerry Howard, star of BBC Three comedy Him & Her, will play the snobbish housewife made famous by Patricia Routledge in the new show, due to air on BBC One this summer.

It will be set in the late 1950s and portray a young Hyacinth desperately encouraging her family to escape their working-class background.

Kerry, sister of comedian Russell Howard, told the BBC: “This is a gift of a part … I can’t wait to play her.”

The Full Monty and Game Of Thrones star Mark Addy will play Hyacinth’s father, and the show will also feature Tony Gardner from Last Tango In Halifax.

Katie Redford, who was dropped last year after being cast in Coronation Street because she gave a false age, will also feature as Hyacinth’s sister Rose.

The prequel is being penned by the writer of the original series, Roy Clarke, who told the BBC: “I’ve been allowed to wander into her background and investigate, almost a piece of archaeology really, until there she was – Young Hyacinth in early blossom.

“I hope those who knew her in her prime will find as much pleasure in this recreation of her as I have.”
