Japan Box Office: ‘Zootopia’ Climbs to Top Spot

Disney’s “Zootopia,” which had finished second in the previous two weekend box office rankings, finally grabbed the top spot for the May 7-8 frame. The film earned $3.57 million on 288,000 admissions, boosted by strong word of mouth.

Sliding to second after two weekends at number one was the Toho animation “Conan the Detective: The Darkest Nightmare,” which recorded $2.57 million on 210,000 admissions. Its cumulative total passed the JPY5 billion ($46 million) milestone, a record for the long-running anime series.

Highest ranking among the new entries was the first part of the two-part police mystery epic “64.” Opening on 319 screens with Toho distributing, the film took $2.37 million and is expected to reach the JPY1.5 billion ($14 million) mark.
