Prince's ex-wife Mayte Garcia on losing their newborn son: 'I was broken'

Mayte Garcia is still coming to terms with the death of her ex-husband Prince, but she is starting to open up about their life together. Mayte was overcome with emotion as she spoke about the loss of the couple's baby son, Boy Gregory, in 1996, just a week after his birth, and became teary-eyed as she addressed the audience at the Single Mums Planet's Single Mum's Awards.

"Like most women, I always dreamt of becoming a mother," Mayte said. "Unfortunately I got pregnant, lost the baby months later and then I lost my marriage."

She added: "It just wasn't my time yet… after that, I was broken. And I kinda lost hope. I basically gave up my dream of becoming a mum."

Shortly after her split from Prince, Mayte agreed to take part in the VH1 reality show Hollywood Exes, during which she spoke about her relationship with the iconic singer. Her appearance on the programme ultimately changed her life.

"The show served as therapy for me," the 42-year-old explained. "I opened up about losing my son and, in return, I gained a daughter. Long story short, a woman watching my show was moved enough to reach out to me through Twitter about adopting her baby."
