Gina Rodriguez 'loving' life as a new vegan

Actress Gina Rodriguez shunned traditional barbecue food over America's Memorial Day weekend (28-30May16) after choosing to go vegan.

The Jane the Virgin star took to Twitter.com on Tuesday (31May16) and revealed she is five days into her new plant-based diet, indicating she did not indulge in the typical grilled meats many of her fellow countrymen and women enjoyed over the annual holiday.

"Day 5, vegan life," she wrote. "Loving it. I feel so cleeeeeeeeean (sic)."

Gina later admitted she had decided to try cutting out all animal products from her diet after spending time with her clean-eating friends.

"I just kind of fell into it because my friends were here and they are vegan," she explained, before declaring, "I love it."

However, that doesn't mean Gina won't miss some of her favourite Latin foods.

"@HereIsGina you're tough going the vegan route," commented one follower. "Can't imagine my life without tortas de chorizo (chorizo panini)".

The remark prompted the 31-year-old to quip, "Well dang don't remind me!!!!!"

It is not clear how long Gina plans to stay vegan, but she isn't the first star to adopt the diet.

Supermodel and new mum Chrissy Teigen attempted to cut out all meat and dairy last week (25May16), but she lasted just 12 hours.

Chrissy, who released her first cookbook, Cravings: Recipes For All the Food You Want to Eat, in February (16), took to Twitter to announce her new healthy lifestyle, joking, "i have been vegan for 12 hours and I've said it 14 times today."

Minutes later, she admitted her craving for meat, adding, "and now it is time for rib eye wednesdays. don't question my veganism."
