“Mean Girls” and “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical” led the field with 12 Tony Award nominations each on Tuesday, including Best Musical.
A critically acclaimed revival of “Angels in America” earned 11 nominations, including for stars Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane, tying with the new Tony Shalhoub musical “The Band’s Visit” and the musical revival “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel.”
“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” the hit two-part drama that follows up on J.K. Rowling’s beloved wizard franchise, picked up 10 nominations, including Best Play. The show, which broke the record in its London run by winning nine Olivier Awards, has become a gigantic hit on both sides of the Atlantic — setting box office records for a nonmusical on Broadway.
The Tony committee also announced special awards for Bruce Springsteen and John Leguizamo for their one-man shows this past season — even though Leguizamo’s “Latin History for Morons” picked up a surprise nod in the Best Play category.
The awards, presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, previously announced that actress Chita Rivera and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber will received lifetime achievement awards.
Tony nominees Sara Bareilles (“Waitress”) and Josh Groban (“Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812”) will co-host this year’s ceremony, which will be held June 10 at Radio City Music Hall.
Winners will be announced on the 72 Annual Tony Awards
