Winter has come and gone—and we are not at all prepared for it. As the last season of Game Of Thrones stalks toward us like a relentless White Walker, the cast has been shooting their final scenes and taking to social media to say some hard goodbyes.
On Saturday, Maisie Williams was the latest GoT regular to bid the show adieu with an Instagram post that captures all the gory greatness of the Seven Kingdoms. Williams plays the badass Arya Stark, a character who goes from a precocious kid from Winterfell to a killing machine. The actress posted an image that captures Arya pretty accurately: A pair of white tennis shoes completely doused in blood.
"goodbye belfast. goodbye arya. goodbye game of thrones. what a joy i’ve had. here’s to the adventures to come #lastwomanstanding #barely #immasleepforthenextfouryears #justkiddingidontslee," Williams wrote.
The photo also sparked immediate rumors about whether or not the shoes are a clue about the final season: Maybe they mean Arya mets a grisly fate—or maybe they mean she keeps carrying out lethal vengeance on her foes.
Earlier this month, Emilia Clarke also said goodbye on Instagram, albeit with a much less brutal photo. She wrote a moving note about the GoT journey, which has allowed her to play the unforgettable Daenerys Stormborn a.k.a. the Mother of Dragons a.k.a. the Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea a.k.a. the Unburnt a.k.a. the Breaker of Chains.
"Hopped on a boat to an island to say goodbye to the land that has been my home away from home for almost a decade," she wrote. "It’s been a trip @gameofthrones thank you for the life I never dreamed I’d be able to live and the family I’ll never stop missing #💔#lastseasonitis."
Nathalie Emmanuel, who plays Khaleesi's right hand Missandei, wrote a more ambiguous tribute to Belfast, where the show often shoots. "When you see the sunrise over Belfast with the people who, over the last 6 years, have become family... in a city that now feels like home. A new day marks new beginnings. Ain’t that the truth.... Love you all you crazy kids ❤️," she wrote.
Meanwhile, season-one favorite Jason Momoa joined the cast to commemorate the show's ending. Although he said he was only back for "kisses and hugs and The the black stuff," some fans speculated he might be back on location for something related to the show's finale.
"I’m so grateful to be apart of the greatest show on earth. I’m honored to be able to come to Ireland and celebrate with my friends. I’m just here for kisses and hugs and The black stuff 😜😜😜😜. mahalo David and Dan you are legends . Congrats to the talented crew and cast. Aloha j," he captioned a bunch of photos with the cast.
The real waterworks are going to start when Peter Dinklage and Kit Harrington weigh in. At least Harrington doesn't have Instagram—we know we're going to lose it when Jon Snow leaves us.
