Mark Rylance has said African American actors are now in a “stronger position” thanks to the Oscars diversity controversy and Chris Rock’s comments as host.
And he revealed he contemplated changing his Oscars acceptance speech after watching the video montage of host Chris Rock interviewing movie-goers in Compton.
The interviewees, all but one of whom were black, said they had not heard of most of the Oscar-nominated films – but praised overlooked films including Straight Outta Compton.
Mark, who won best supporting actor for his role in Bridge of Spies, said: “I thought about dropping it after the Compton interviews. I longed I was a black actor at that moment receiving an award.
“I knew I wanted to praise Steven (Spielberg) and my fellow nominees. There were other things I could have said but I didn’t get there. It’s better to be spontaneous.”
Backstage, Mark heaped praise on Oscars host Chris Rock, saying: “I think African American actors are in a stronger position now thanks to what Chris Rock has done tonight and what the activists around this issue have said.”
Chris delivered a hard-hitting monologue about the Oscars diversity row, and punctuated the show with jokes about racism.
Mark added that he didn’t feel a sense of competition with his fellow nominees.
