Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year to get engaged. Naturally, it’s also the perfect time to reflect on some of our favorite Hollywood proposal stories. From flashy cars to the latest designer bags, celebrities live large. So it’s no surprise that when it comes to popping the question to their significant others, the pressure is on. Fortunately, many of them are able to live up to cinematic gestures of romance. From creating igloos to sneaking into their lover’s apartments and decorating them with rose petals, here are a few of the of the most romantic celebrity proposals in history.

How does a prince whose every move is followed by the world plan an intimate engagement? He takes his partner in crime to a far away land. In October 2010, William asked his longtime girlfriend, Kate Middleton, to marry him during an overnight stopover at Kenya’s Rutundu Log Cabins. After accepting his proposal, the couple snuggled by the fire and spent their first night as an engaged duo in a four poster bed that was hand carved from local trees. The cabin was so remote that it did not even have electricity and they were advised to bring their own food and drink, which we’re sure Will had covered. As for the ring? The prince presented her with the late Princess Diana’s breathtaking diamond-and-sapphire engagement band. “It’s very special to me, as Kate is very special to me now as well,” shared Prince William. “It was only right the two were put together. With the Kardashian clan, everything is a flashy endeavor. Add Kanye West into the mix, and you’re in for some real fireworks. On Kim Kardashian’s 33rd birthday on Oct. 21, 2013, the rapper rented out AT&T Park — home to the San Francisco Giants. He blindfolded Kim to amp up the level of surprise and when the duo arrived, all of the lights in the stadium were dimmed. Then he got down on one knee and a 50-piece orchestra began to play Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful.” “Pleeease Marry Meee!!!” flashed in front of them on the Jumbotron screen. After she accepted his proposal, the lights turned on to reveal the entire Kardashian/Jenner clan as well as some of Kim’s closest friends who came running out from the dugout. Nick Cannon was so infatuated with Mariah Carey that he proposed to her twice. One night when the Empire State Building was lit up in her favorite colors — pink and purple — Cannon seized upon the opportunity and escorted her to the rooftop of her Manhattan apartment where he dropped to one knee and presented her with a 17-carat diamond that he had hidden inside of a candy ring pop. A few days later, he fulfilled Mariah’s fantasy of being abducted by her knight in shining armor. “He sort of kidnapped me and took me on a helicopter ride,” she told People. “Then he re-proposed.” The couple — who are parents to twins Monroe and Moroccan — divorced in December 2014. Will Smith had no formal plan in mind to propose to Jada Pinkett; he just casually asked the very important question out one night in bed. “We were just lying there, going to sleep. I looked over at her and I said, ‘Hey, we might be real good married. Wassup? You wanna marry me?’” There was no ring involved but that didn’t stop Jada from agreeing to take the plunge with the actor. “Unplanned. No ring. After jumping on Oprah’s couch and publicly declaring his love for Katie Holmes in 2005, it became clear that Katie was “the one” for Tom Cruise. In June of that same year, he announced to the world that he had a fiancée who had converted from Catholicism to the Church of Scientology. To pop the question, Cruise took Holmes to the City of Light, where he presented her with a 5-carat yellow diamond at the top of the Eiffel Tower following a romantic dinner at Le Jules Verne. “Yes, I proposed to her. … It was early this morning at the Eiffel Tower, so I haven’t slept at all,” the actor said at a Paris press conference. “Today is a magnificent day for me, I’m engaged to a magnificent woman.” Four months later, TomKat revealed that Holmes was pregnant and in August 2006, baby Suri was born. In June 2012, Holmes filed for divorce, winning full custody of the couple’s daughter.

To ask for the hand of Angelina Jolie (seven years after they started dating), Brad Pitt made it a family affair. He wrangled their six children (Maddox, Pax, Shiloh, Zahara, Vivienne, and Knox) and presented Jolie with a 16-carat engagement ring in front of all of them. She, of course, instantly said yes, making Pitt and the kids very happy.
