Sonam Kapoor's latest release Neerja, which was based on the sacrifice of air hostess Neerja Bhanot while rescuing passengers from armed hijackers, has been declared tax-free in Maharashtra.
An excited Sonam said, ''A big Thank You to the Government of Maharashtra for making Neerja tax-free with immediate effect. Humbled.'' Directed by Ram Madhvani, Neerja had also starred Shabana Azmi and other actors and the film was lauded by critics and audiences alike.
For those who do not know this, Neerja Bhanot was killed while saving passengers from terrorists on board the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 on 5 September 1986. Following this act of valour, Neerja posthumously became the youngest recipient of India's highest civilian award for bravery, The Ashok Chakra while Pakistan also bestowed the prestigious Tamgha-e- Insaaniyat Award to her for showing incredible human kindness during the hijack.
