Oscars 2016: Dustin Lance Black Tells Sam Smith To Stop Texting Tom Daley As He Criticises Sam’s Speech

Sam Smith’s acceptance speech at the Oscars has become one of the big talking points from the night, with the singer suggesting that he might be the first openly gay man to win an Academy Award.

Sam, who won the trophy for Best Original Song for Spectre’s ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ with songwriter Jimmy Napes, dedicated his win to the LGBT+ community, saying: “I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen and he said no openly gay man had won an Oscar.

“If this is the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community around the world. I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope that we can all stand as equals one day.”

Sir Ian was, in fact, referring specifically to no openly gay men being awarded the Oscar for Best Actor in his interview with The Guardian.
