The 88th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood were among the most hotly discussed in recent history.
Argument surrounded the decision not to nominate any black actors and the host Chris Rock had some cutting things to say in his eagerly awaited monologue, opening with the line: "There weren't black nominees in the '60s – why didn't we protest then? Because we had more important things to protest about."
The Revenant led the shortlist with 12 nominations and it was for his role in that film that netted Leonardo DiCaprio his first Oscar,
Brie Larson was named best actress Oscar for Room and Spotlight took home the best picture Oscar. Mad Max: Fury Road picked up the most awards of the night, with six accolades.
Mark Rylance won the best supporting actor Oscar, with fellow Briton Sam Smith winning best original song.
