Brussels, the capital of the European Union, has been hit by two coordinated blasts – one in its subway and another one at its airport — causing so far 21 casualties on Tuesday morning.
The blast at Zaventem airport – Belgium’s largest — killed 13 people and was caused by a suicide bombing, per the Belgian prosecutor.
The bomb attack in the subway took place at the station Maelbeek in Brussels which is near public institutions, including the European parliament, now placed under maximum security. At least 8 people were killed in that subway blast.
“We’re at war. Europe has been repeatedly attacked and we must be determined to fight terrorism. The threat is even greater today than before the Nov.13 attacks at the Bataclan and Stade de France,” said Manuel Valls, France’s prime minister.
Local media have noted the attacks on Belgian soil come four days after the arrest of Salah Abdeslam, one of the prime suspects in the Nov.13 Paris attack, in Molenbeek in Brussels. Explosives were found in Abdeslam’s apartment, leading investigators to think that he was plotting another attack.
Police have been conducting anti-terrorism raids in Belgium to track down Abdeslam’s accomplice, Laachroui Najim, according to report.
All public transportations, schools and public institutions have been shut down in Brussels.
More to come.
