Sally Field says The Amazing Spider-Man was not her "kind of movie."
That's about the kindest thing the 69-year-old actress, who played Aunt May in the 2012 reboot of the franchise, had to say about the movie, confessing she only took the role to support a dying friend.
"My friend, Laura Ziskin, was the producer, and we knew it would be her last film," Field revealed on Howard Stern's Sirius XM radio show. "She was my first producing partner and she was a spectacular human."
Ziskin died of breast cancer in 2011, a few months after filming wrapped on Spider-Man.
The Academy Award winner also admitted she didn't put a great deal of thought into the part. "It's really hard to find a three dimensional character in it," she said, before putting it more bluntly. "You work it as much as you can, but you can't put ten pounds of s**t in a five pound bag."
Luckily for her, Field's tenure as Aunt May was short-lived. The franchise fizzled out after The Amazing Spider-Man 2, prompting Sony to cut a deal to reboot Spider-Man with Marvel Studios' help. Tom Holland is the latest actor donning Peter Parker's super suit, while Marisa Tomei will reportedly play Aunt May.
