I’ve always said that being a fan of The Walking Dead has it’s ups and downs. Look at the history of the show, look how it varies so much in quality, constantly zigzagging between excellent TV viewing to direness.
I always thought that it was good for a couple of half seasons, then bad for a couple, then back to good. Now I realise that the show is continually just going up and down, never really settling, being good or bad for a few episodes before switching back.
Take this season, number 6, as an example. It began with some great episodes. Setting a few stories within one day, switching between characters which made for interesting viewing and the standout episode, JSS, made us realise why we love this show so much.
Then came the whole Glenn death thing, which made people angry, me less so, and highlighted the inherent problems with the show again. The mid-season finale was very much a letdown and most people thought the premiere was a confusing dud.
Then the show hit it’s stride again and we went from strength to strength. Daryl and Rick road trip. The Hilltop community. The raid on the compound. Maggie and Carol being captured.
It was a string of excellent episodes, but now it seems we’re reaching a decline yet again. In the last episode people complained about the death of Denise, a shocking moment lessened when you realised how unnecessary it was. And the latest episode, East, faced a problem of stupidity when most of the best fighters left Alexandria, leaving it undefended.
