Willow Smith, the 15-year-old daughter of superstar Will Smith once best known for her song “Whip My Hair,” is now most famous for the precocious, sometimes out-there things she says in interviews, statements that show the confidence of someone much older.
In her latest, with Teen Vogue, the singer and actress explains that there was a time when she felt, as the writer put it, “less empowered.” That’s right, Willow Smith! It was way back in 2013, so try hard to remember.
“Yes. One hundred percent,” Smith answered. “After ‘Whip My Hair’ and all the publicity, after going on tour in the U.K., after saying no to the Annie film, all of this crap was going on in my life, and I had to sit down and say, 'Who are you? On a real note. Are you this or this?’"
Smith memorably dropped out of the starring role of the 2014 Annie remake, produced by her parents, citing her "intuition.”
“During that time of figuring it out, I was lost and super insecure,” Smith said of her tween self. “But then I stopped trying to find myself in these other inanimate objects, people, and ideas. I realized it isn’t about finding yourself — it’s about creating yourself."
