Kelantan might finally be getting a cinema

The Malaysian states of Perlis and Kelantan share one thing in common when it comes to cinematic leisure – neither has a cinema.

Though it seems like things are about to change for Kelantan, in state capital Kota Bahru specifically, as one of the long-running malls in the city, KB Mall, is moving forward with its plans to open a cinema soon.

"Yes, a cinema is opening at the mall, called Paragon Cinemas," said Mr Ashrul, Leasing Executive of KB Mall, when contacted by Cinema Online.

It was confirmed by Mr Ashrul that the 8-screen cinema is still under construction at the moment. It is expected to open in July 2016, though the date is still tentative.

There had previously been reports of Kelantan Local Government, Housing and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Fattah Mahmood denying that the cinema is set to open soon as it reportedly has not been given the permission for operation.

KB Mall rep, however, did not comment on the issue.

Exhibitors that are planning to open cinemas in Kelantan are required to adhere by the Sharia Law, whereby males and females are required to sit separately, only certain movies will be allowed screening and the halls must be suitably lit during screenings.

If KB Mall's plans for Paragon Cinemas really come to fruition, this will mark the first time for a cinema to be opened in the state in the past two decades.
