Longtime viewers of ABC's country music drama won't be getting any answers after Wednesday's series finale, when it appeared one of its main characters, Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere), may have perished in a fatal plane crash.
At the end of the final episode, Juliette -- opting to skip the Oscars, for which she was a nominee -- was feared to have died after her private plane sent a distress call as the singer was flying back to reunite with her ex-husband, Avery (Jonathan Jackson).
However, there was an alternate ending that had Nashville end on a far happier note.
As TVLine reports, the second option had Juliette's jet landing safely, with her and Avery happily reuniting.
ABC officially canceled the series on May 12 and one week later, Lionsgate TV, the studio behind Nashville, tweeted that there have been "numerous talks with interested networks" about keeping it alive.
Just days after Nashville was axed, ET caught up with star Connie Britton at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York City, where she admitted she wasn't "necessarily surprised" about the cancellation.
"I try to really put a silver lining on it and just say, 'Hey, we got four years out of it and I really, really value the experience," the 49-year-old actress said, keeping hope alive that the show could continue on: "You never know."
The news of Nashville's cancellation came on the same day Panettiere revealed she was still struggling with postpartum depression and would be taking time to "reflect holistically" on her well-being.
"She probably just needed more help," a source told ET. "And her heart wasn't in it to focus on the show."
