In a surprising show of how fans can influence the roles their favourite celebrities play, Olivia Munn reveals in an interview that it was fan art that won her the role of Psylocke in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’.
“They (writer-producer Simon Kinberg and director Bryan Singer) were, I guess, going through images of Psylocke online and serendipitously, fans had created pictures of me as the character. So that made them think, ‘Oh yeah, let’s offer this to Olivia’,” said the 35-year-old actress.
Munn rejected a role in ‘Deadpool’, another Marvel blockbuster, but was especially keen on playing this character.
The self-professed ‘X-Men’ fan said, “When he (Kinberg) told me that they’d offered me the role, I told him I loved Psylocke.”
The actress, whose mother is Vietnamese-American, also wasn’t shy about bringing her knowledge of her character to the table with producer Kinberg, who remarked that she even knew more about Psylocke than he did.

With all the expectations for her to play a convincingly skilled and lethal superheroine in the movie’s fight scenes, the dedicated actress stuck to a rigorous training regime of swordplay and Taekwondo for three months.
On tackling the physical aspect of her role, she said, “At first I was just training a couple of hours a day, but then I realised that I really wanted to be able to do the fight scenes. So then my training went from a few times a week to about seven hours every single day for three months.”
