In a move akin to Thanos' balance-restoring finger snap in Avengers: Infinity War, Twitter has deleted millions of followers from some of its most public members in one fell swoop.
Twitter announced plans this week to crack down on "problematic accounts", and those plans apparently included banning millions of them outright. Among those taking the hit were Katy Perry, the most-followed person on Twitter.
She went from 109.6 million followers on Wednesday (July 11) to 107 million on Friday, while her former frenemyTaylor Swift lost a whopping 1.8 million, now standing at 83.2 million followers total.
Rihanna lost 856,000 followers in the purge, while Lily Allen made light of losing "half a million followers". She later questioned if Twitter's mass bannings were politically motivated.
Lily tweeted: "Looking at numbers of some prominent right wingers and theirs don't seem to be moving so drastically, which is odd, dontcha think ? #Twittercull"
Hard-line right-wing US president Donald Trump did lose 196,000 followers from his personal Twitter, but the @POTUS account somehow gained some followers in the banning process.
Meanwhile, former president Barack Obama lost 2 million followers from his personal account. There is no word yet on whether further mass bannings will occur, or whether it was a single sweeping action by Twitter.
In a blog posted earlier this week, Twitter executive Vijaya Gadde said that the company would take more steps to "proactively identify and challenge" abusive accounts in the future.
