Bollywood is not for everyone. Some realize it sooner and tread different paths to make different achievements in life, while others keep trying till the industry throws them off.
In this giant rigmarole of realizations and refusals, we have seen many of our loved celebs fading out into oblivion, leaving us wondering, “where are they, how are they...”
We are, hence, starting this “Missing Reports” series where we dig deep into the untold stories of such missing stars. Today we are covering the Damini fame, Meenakshi Seshadri and her journey after Bollywood.
Let us know in the comment section, if there is any star, you want us to dig out from the black hole of Bollywood sanyas.
Fame with Damini
Damini was one of the biggest hits of its time. For the subject it covered and the treatment of it, over the years it has become a cult feminist masterpiece. One of the highest grossing of 1993, Damini is also remembered for Meenakshi Seshadri’s unparalleled performance, which, without a doubt, was the best of her career.
Debut with Jackie Shroff
But Damini was not the only box office success by this talented 80-90s actress. She was one of Subhash Ghai’s finds who he had launched with Jackie Shroff in 1983. Their debut, Hero, was an “All time blockbuster" at the box office which turned the debutants into overnight stars and Film-makers queued-up the gates of Meenakshi and Jackie who despite being industry outsiders had proved their mettle.
Pageant winner
But the major commercial success and critical acclamation of Hero and her performance in it was not Meenakshi's first brush up with success. Very few of us know or remember that the actress was crowned Miss India in 1981, and there after she was approached by the film maker to grace the big screen. She had also represented India in Miss International 1981 held in Japan, but didn't place.
The girl next door
Born in a traditional Tamil family, Seshadri moved to the big city from Sindri, Jharkhand. Even before winning Eve's Weekly Miss India contest, she had established herself as a performing artist and was professionally trained in classical dance forms like Kuchipudi, Kathak, Bharatnatyam, and Odissi.
Many stories of success
Between Hero and Damini, Meenakshi was seen in a plethora of Bollywood hits. Hoshiyar, Meri Jung, Shahenshah, Gayal, Ghar Ho to Aisa are just a few among them. She was also seen in a couple of South Indian films. Won't be refutable if we said, success never evaded the actress and even after years of her bidding farewell to the industry, she is fondly remembered. The question is, "where is she and why did she disappear all of a sudden?"
Taking the plunge
Two years after delivering the phenomenal Damini, instead of aiming for higher career goals, Meenakshi chose to 'settle down'. In 1995, right at the peak of her career, the actress tied the knot with Harish Mysore, who is an investment banker by profession.
Settling down
She bid adieu to B'town and right after her civil marriage to Harish, Meenakshi flew all the way to the US to accompany her husband. The couple also had a registered marriage in New York. They are now a complete family with a son and a daughter and have been residing in the mid-American city of Plano, TX for decades.
Living in rhythms
But, for Meenakshi, quitting Bollywood didn't translate into abandoning her craft. She was an accomplished dancer way before becoming a part of the industry and she remains to be so even years after leaving movies. Far away from India, she spends time with young dance enthusiasts, and teaches them Bharatnatyam, Kathak, and Odissi.
Serving people
She often joins her students in their performances at fundraisers and charity events. They also performed at the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin and all the funds collected were channeled toward various philanthropic causes.
She is happy away from the limelight
After a long hiatus, the actress came back in news after paying a surprise visit to Rishi Kapoor in 2015. Her Damini co-star, almost failed to recognize her, took to twitter to share an adorable pic from their quick meet. Though, Rishi Kapor suggested that she may take up roles in movies, Meenakshi denied cleared that she has no plans of returning to the screen anytime soon. Interestingly, she was the chief guest at Miss India USA pageant 2019.
