From Titanic to The Revenant: Will Leonardo DiCaprio finally win an Oscar this year?

Leonardo DiCaprio has won a great deal of affection for being both a Hollywood heartthrob and an acclaimed actor.

But in a career that has spanned more than 20 years – and seen him star in a dazzling list of hit films – an Oscar has eluded him.

The boy who would become one of the world’s most famous men was born in Los Angeles on November 11 1974. His mother was a legal secretary and his father a comic-book writer.

His first taste of professional acting was in commercials when he was a teenager, and in 1990 he landed a role in a short-lived TV version of the movie Parenthood.

He went on to have small parts on several shows, including The New Lassie, Roseanne and Santa Barbara.

His big break came in 1992 when he beat 400 other young actors to play the lead role in the movie This Boy’s Life alongside Ellen Barkin and Robert De Niro.

He went on to achieve critical acclaim for his role as a boy with learning difficulties in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, which also starred Johnny Depp and Juliette Lewis.
