Lady Gaga performed a powerful tribute to sexual abuse survivors - and paid tribute to Taylor Kinney for 'loving the survivor in me'

Lady Gaga delivered an emotional performance of Til It Happens To You – but missed out on the Oscar for best song.

The singer was introduced by American vice president Joe Biden, who received a standing ovation as he spoke out about sexual abuse.

Gaga co-wrote Til It Happens To You with Diane Warren for the documentary The Hunting Ground, an in-depth look at rape on American campuses.

It was nominated for best original song but lost out to Sam Smith’s Bond theme, Writing’s On The Wall.

Joe said: “Despite significant progress over the last few years, too many women and men on and off campuses are still victims of sexual abuse… take the pledge that says I will intervene in situations where consent has not or cannot be given.”

He added: “Let’s change the culture, we must and we can change the culture.”

Gaga sang at a white grand piano, surrounded by women displaying the words “Survivor” and “Unbroken” written on their arms.

The lyrics included: “Till it happens to you, you don’t know/ How it feels, how it feels.”
