Cannes: Thailand To Display New Talent at Thai Pitches

Making up for not having any films in Official Selection at Cannes this year, Thailand is going over board to demonstrate that it has plenty of upcoming movie making talent.

Thailand’s Ministry of Culture will be organizing the ‘project pitching and funding event, ‘Thai Pitch.’ The pitches will take place at the Thai Pavilion in Cannes’ International Village on Saturday and Sunday, May 14-15. The selection includes projects by newcomers Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit  and Anucha Boonyawatana and by Rutaiwan Wongsirasawad, 10 years after her debut feature “Oops! There’s Dad.”

Thamrongrattanarit, who swept the Suphanahongsa Awards earlier this year with his “Freelance,” will pitch “Die Tomorrow,” a six part film about unusual deaths, as reported by the local media.

Boonyawatana, whose first film “The Blue Hour” debuted in the 2015 Berlin festival’s Panorama section, is seeking partners for “Malila,” a philosophical drama about Buddhism and death. It takes the point of view of a monk whose past male lover appears in a different form.

Veteran TV commercial director, Wongsirasawad presents “To Become A Butterfly.” The story of determination and survival features a woman raising an autistic son, but whose own fortunes seem the opposite of her child’s. Production is by Rasarin Tanalerttararom, who is currently also producing established director Pen-ek Ratanaruang’s “Samui Song.”
