Mariah Carey and Robert De Niro honoured at GLAAD Awards

Mariah Carey has scooped a GLAAD award, and said it felt “more real” than some of her other accolades.

The pop diva picked up the Ally gong at the Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Awards, which honour the media “for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community”.

“Some awards are about statistics and things like that, and some are about like something a little more real. Do you know what I mean?” she said.

“This feels like one of those moments, so I think it’s great.”

Mariah was handed her trophy by Lee Daniels, who directed her in the movie Precious in 2009.

“Mariah is one of us,” said the filmmaker, who is openly gay.

As she accepted the award, Mariah said: “I wish all of you love, peace and harmony, and as my five-year-old son Rocky likes to say, ‘boobies and butts’.”

The 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards were hosted by Laverne Cox, who has been a pioneering force for transgender performers with her role in Orange Is The New Black.
Robert De Niro was also among the winners, picking up the Excellence in Media Award from his Joy co-star Jennifer Lawrence.

“If I were a lesbian, I’d be all over you,” he joked. “Being a father figure has its limitations.”
