Michelle Rodriguez’ ‘Tomboy, A Revenger’s Tale’ Bought by Saban

Saban Films has acquired North American distribution rights to Michelle Rodriguez’ gender-swapping action movie “Tomboy, A Revenger’s Tale.”

The film follows an assassin, who’s double crossed by gangsters and finds himself in the hands of a rogue surgeon — played by Sigourney Weaver — who turns him into a woman. Rodriguez plays the assassin, who sets out for revenge.

Walter Hill directed from a script he wrote with Denis Hamill. Tony Shalhoub, Anthony LaPaglia and Caitlin Gerard also star.

“This is a revenge action thriller with a twist,” said Saban Film’s Bill Bromiley. “’Tomboy, A Revenger’s Tale’ is a unique and clever film which will take audience in a cool adventure.”

SBS Films’ Saïd Ben Saïd produced the film alongside Michel Merkt, and Solution Entertainment Group is handling global sales.

The deal was closed during the Cannes Film Festival, where Saban also bought Colm McCarthy’s “The Girl with All the Gifts,” starring Gemma Arterton, Paddy Considine, Glenn Close, and Sennia Nanua; and John Michael McDonagh’s “War on Everyone,” starring Michael Peña, Alexander Skarsgård, Theo James, and Tessa Thompson.

SBS Productions is represented by Behr Abramson Levy.  ICM Partners negotiated the deal on behalf of filmmakers, and Bill Bromiley and Ness Saban negotiated the deal on behalf of Saban Films.

Prior to Cannes, Saban Films also acquired domestic rights to Rob Zombie’s “31,” starring Sheri Moon Zombie, Malcolm McDowell, Jeff Daniel Phillips and Meg Foster; and Renny Harlin’s action comedy “Skiptrace,” starring Jackie Chan and Johnny Knoxville, out of Berlin.
