When Thandie Newton speaks out, Starbucks listens. The coffee chain has apologized publicly after the actress tweeted out a photo of a display at one of their locations that looked ripped straight out of Birth of a Nation.
The display featured a figurine of a black child wearing a loin cloth and a safari hat; he was holding coffee beans from Colombia, so in addition to being a gross stereotype, it was also factually inaccurate.
“Seriously,” Newton wrote. “Happy New Year circa 19th century.”
A little bit later, Starbucks tweeted out an apology.
