Cambridge makes it three in a row over Oxford in University Challenge

Students from Cambridge’s Peterhouse college stormed to victory over their Oxford rivals, claiming the title of University Challenge.

The team won the highbrow BBC2 quiz for the first time, beating Oxford’s St John’s College by 215 points to 30. They also beat them during the show’s quarter-finals.

The feat was a historic third consecutive win for Cambridge over Oxford.

Commenting on the result, host Jeremy Paxman, said: “You can do much better than that St John’s as we’ve seen in many a previous match, but someone has got to win, and Peterhouse, that was a storming performance. Another storming performance from you.”

He said: “I thought it was a phenomenal performance. But I am really impressed by how many maths questions there were.

“You’re probably cursing the fact that there’s a mathematician giving away the trophy, there were so many.”
