Comedian Ricky Gervais credits madness for helping him cope as critics slam his new movie, Special Correspondents.
The comedy was released on streaming service Netflix last month (Apr16), and although it is highly rated on the website, reviewers from some major entertainment publications have attacked the film.
Ricky has chosen to laugh off the disses during brief fits of insanity rather than sulking and feeling sorry for himself.
"I don't think I am sane," he joked to Rolling Stone magazine. "I've reached the point now where I don't care if I'm sane or not, because as long as I'm happy it doesn't matter."
"I see lots of mad people that seem really happy," he chuckled. "I remember once, (actor/director) Christopher Guest said, 'How will we know whether we've lost it or not?' And I said, 'Who cares?' And he laughed."
However, Ricky admits being a Hollywood A-lister isn't all fun and games, confessing he feels like his stress load only increases as his star rises.
"You get stressed out of your head with all the pressures and can't wait for it to be over," he shared. "Last year was the maddest year I've ever had in my career.
"I've been working on that film (Special Correspondents) for two or three years, but I was going to do the (David Brent: Life on the Road) movie first. Then suddenly, after three years of puttering around doing (TV series) Derek and writing two films in various states of production, we get the call to make Special Correspondents.
